Cecil Allen Unruh was born June 19, 1923 on the family farm south of Greensburg, Kansas to Jacob P. and Susie Unruh. He passed away on September 18, 2020 at the age of 97 at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, Kansas.
In 1946, he married Maurine Koehn and together they welcomed two children. They lived in Greensburg, Kansas; Wolsey, South Dakota; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and finally, Hutchinson, Kansas.
Throughout his working life, Cecil enjoyed a myriad of professions, including farming, grain elevator owner, restauranteur, bakery owner, and the manager of gift shops in Colorado. As a leader, he chaired the Board of Kiowa County ( Kansas ) Hospital, the Greensburg City Council, and served as President of the Greensburg Rotary Club. His interests included travel, cooking, exploring his ancestry, and interacting with people from all walks of life. He traveled to Israel three times, and brought a wealth of information to the Sunday School class he led at First Christian Church ( Disciples of Christ) in Hutchinson, Kansas, where he was a long time member.
Cecil is survived by his wife, Maurine; his children, Pamela and her husband Donald Pooler of Bonner Springs, Kansas, and their children,
Angela and Matthew Douglass, and Jennifer Pooler; son, Eric and wife Gayle ( Christenson) Unruh of Casper, Wyoming, and their children, D. Alexander and Heidi ( Bruner) Unruh, Elizabeth Unruh, and Christopher and Katherine ( Dolajak) Unruh; two great grandchildren; Amelia Ransom Douglass and Ezra Jet Unruh.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters, Clarence, Otis, Lawrence, Annie, Ethel, Vernie, and Edwin; a great granddaughter, Joy Ana Douglass.
Memorial service will be announced and held at a later date. The family appreciates memorial donations to the First Christian Church of Hutchinson, Kansas, or Mennonite Friendship Communities of South Hutchinson, Kansas, and they may be left in care of Old Mission-Heritage Funeral Home, 528 N. Main Street, Hutchinson, Kansas.
