Esther E. "Essie" Evelyn Zerger, 92. passed away at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty
Prairie, Kansas October 12, 2013. The daughter of Andrew and Anna Goering,
she was born July 31, 1921 in Pretty Prairie, Kansas.
A graduate of Pretty Prairie High School, she spent her career as a cook. She
was a member of the First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie, where she spent
many years as the church pianist. She was a master gardener tending her
flowers and vegetables, and tended her chickens with the utmost care and love.
As the matriarch of the family she always remembered each family member's
birthdays with special cards and greetings. Until recently she continually played
the piano at the nursing home providing enjoyment to her friends.
She married Clifford R. Zerger on December 22, 1956 in Pretty Prairie, Kansas.
He died on August 13, 2003. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters, and, 6 brothers.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm with the
family present from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Old Mission - Heritage Funeral Home.
Memorial celebration will be Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 10:30 at First
Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie with Pastor Lester Zook presiding. Burial will
follow in First Mennonite Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has
asked that memorial gifts be made to the First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie
and can be left in care of the funeral home.
