Obituary

Glenn Paul Lay, 72, passed away at home on January 14, 2021 after a courageous battle against lung cancer.  He was surrounded by family and friends.

Glenn was born on March 28, 1948 to Dorothy ( Healzer) and Vernon Lay at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas.  A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, Glenn graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1967.  He attended Hutchinson Junior College before joining the United States Army in may of 1969.  He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and Thailand and was honorably discharged in 1972.

Glenn married Sally Balderson (Torres) and raised two daughters from this relationship, Michelle and Tiffany.  Glenn began dating Debbie Ash in 1981, who has been his companion to this day.  This relationship gained him another daughter, Lynnie ( Dee Lynn).  When his daughters were small, it seemed that the outside world stopped, that everything else was insignificant.  Glenn's greatest passion was raising his daughters.  His unselfish desire of being the best dad he could be surpassed any of his other goals.  This was only true though until his grandchildren were born.  The girls joke about getting kicked " to the curb" once the grandchildren came into his life.  He had ten grandchildren and loved all of them dearly.  One in particular was especially dear to his heart, his youngest granddaughter, Addison.

One of Glenn's passions in his younger years was his 1975 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade which he proudly joined the Salt City 4-Wheeler Club.  He proudly displayed his trophies from gatherings in Colorado and Oklahoma.  In retirement, Glenn spent most of his free time woodworking in his shop, caring for his yard and landscaping , hunting, and riding his Harley Davidsons ( plural, he was proud of that).  He rarely missed his grandchildren's events, games, and performances.  If you look in his closet you will find t-shirts and sweartshirts supporting different schools and sport clubs.  He was a regular in the gym, stadium, or field.

Glenn had many life-long friends and would do anything for them.  There was no such thing as " running a quick errand"  as he would see somebody in a store or restaurant around town.  He seemed to know everybody in Hutchinson and they knew him.  his good humored personality was evident in all conversations with him.  Beneath the humor was a sincere man with generosity like none other.   Glenn will leave a legacy of generosity, acceptance, and loyalty to all who were fortunate enough to know him.  He truly enjoyed helping others in their homes, yards, shops, and any other way he could.

When Glenn found out he had lung cancer, he was angry at first and felt cheated only because he didn't want to miss out on seeing his family.  Attending Crosspoint Church and listening to the passionate and sometimes humorous sermons of Pastor Andy Addis helped Glenn accept his diagnosis.  His every Sunday attendance was given and he would sit proudly with many of his family members by his side.

Glenn is preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and Vernon Lay, brother Dr. Charles Lay, daughter Michelle Lay Towne, and grandson Taylor Glenn Chavez.

He is survived by daughters Dee Lynn ( Lynnie) Krehbiel and Tiffany ( Jason ) Fry; Debbie Ash, his long- time companion; sisters Karen Gonzales and Ruth Ann Lay; grandchildren Beth Towne, Brent Towne, Michael Starrett, Matthew Towne, Owen Krehbiel, Christian Towne, Dylan Fry, Addison Kreghbiel, Alexander Towne; and by Shelby, his loving dog.
