Obituary

INMAN - Lawrence E. Baker, 85, of Inman, Kan., passed away June 13, 2011, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kan., surrounded by his children. Lawrence was born March 9, 1926, in Rice County, Kan., the son of Ralph and Mabel Starks Baker. Lawrence was the last of their 12 children to pass away. He graduated from Buhler High School in 1943. He then served in The United States Marine Corps as Private First Class. During World War II, he served in the Pacific and Japan.
He married Irene Linder of Langdon, Kan., in August of 1959. During their marriage of 36 years, they had three children. Lawrence was employed by City Services Oil Company until he retired with 30 years of service. He was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting deer, ducks and quail, and trout fishing in Montana. His other passion was collecting books, art, pipes, duck calls, guns, sporting and Civil War memorabilia. Any given Saturday, you could find him perusing through local auctions. He was a member of several hunting and fishing organizations.
Survivors include: daughter, Dr. Leslie Anne Phillips and husband Ken, their children, Nick and Jessica of Fort Worth, Texas; and sons, Troy Baker and his wife Cherise, their son, Jonathan of Hickman, Neb., Geoff Baker, his wife Lynne, their children, Luke Baker, Amanda and Austin Mooningham of Haysville, Kan.
Visitation will be held at Old Mission-Heritage Funeral Home June 17, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. with family present. Funeral services will be held June 18, 2011, 10 a.m. at Old Mission-Heritage Funeral Home, Hutchinson, Kan., with burial to follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Inman Museum or Inman Senior Citizen Center.
