Obituary

Roena Verlene Emmons, 84, of Macksville, Kansas, passed away surrounded by her loving children May 30, 2020 at her home.  The oldest daughter of Verl James Mahin and Clela Inez Huffman Mahin, she was born December 26, 1935 at her grandparents home in rural Valley Center, Kansas.  She and her sister, Ernestine, grew up in the Valley Center area, riding horses and enjoying times with the cousins at Grandma and Grandpa Huffmans.

Roena graduated from Valley Center High School in 1954.  She married Dudley Emmons on January 9, 1954.  After several moves with the Air Force and Boeing, in 1969 they settled on a farm south of Macksville where they raised two children, Cindy and Darin.  They also raised lots of pigs, some cattle, chickens, turkeys, horses, peacocks, guineas, cats and dogs as well as other interesting critters.  It was a lot of hard work, but Roena loved the farm life.

Roena moved to Wichita for a few years then ventured to Pratt, Kansas where she opened a cute little childrens store named after oldest granddaughter, Megan.  She also babysat many children and later worked for Eldercare.  In 2006 she moved back to Macksville and helped care for others, all of whom became good friends.

A member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Macksville, Kansas.  Roena was known by her family as a master seamstress and quilter, designing many of her beautiful creations.  She was also a master flower gardener- she loved working in her yard and flower beds. Most of all she loved her kids, and her granddaughters, Megan and Mindy!  She loved watching Megan play basketball and throw the javelin and she loved turning Mindy loose in her basement with the glitter!  She lived to see and thoroughly enjoy six great-grandchildren!  What a blessing to her!

Roena is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Wood and husband, Glen of rural Haviland; Son, Darin Emmons of Wichita; two granddaughters, Megan Schroeder and husband, Luke of rural Haviland, and Mindy Burr and husband, Jeremy of rural Kinsley; six great grandchildren, Avery, Tucker, Jace, Jaden, Ashlyn, and Brecklyn.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Ernestine Fuller, and former husband, Dudley Emmons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church of Macksville, Kansas, or, the Macksville City Library, Macksville, Kansas and left in care of Old Mission-Heritage Funeral Home, 528 North Main Street, Hutchinson, Kansas, in charge of arrangements.
