Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announced the passing of Wilma Lee Cross, 83, a long-time resident of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026. Born on November 21, 1942, in Hutchinson to William "Bill" Metzler and Estella Campbell, Wilma was known throughout her life for her heart of gold, her loving nature, and her ability to get along with absolutely everyone she met.

On April 15, 1961, Wilma married the love of her life, Alfred Lee Cross, Sr. Together, they built a life centered around family and community. Wilma spent many years serving her community with a smile, working in the cafeterias at Avenue A Grade School, Cessna, and Target. Her warmth and caring spirit made her a welcome, comforting presence to countless local students and coworkers over the years.

Faith and fellowship were deeply important to Wilma. She attended church regularly and was an active member of the Moose Lodge. She was also an avid bowler who spent many happy hours with friends at Riverside Lanes. She also had a love for playing bunko with friends and family. Above all, Wilma loved her family fiercely, adored Elvis Presley and held a deep affection for cats, enjoyed gardening and would frolic in the flowers at times. She cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Wilma is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alfred Lee Cross, Sr.; her parents, Estella Campbell and William Bill Metzler; her brothers and sisters; and her precious great-granddaughter, Myka Roddy.

Her legacy of love lives on through her three children: her daughter, Teresa Vonhemel; her son, Alfred Cross Jr. and wife Terri; and her daughter, Estella Davis and husband Rafe. She is also survived by her five cherished grandchildren, Justin Nelson, Jessica Roddy and husband Justin, Jamie Oquenda, Khylie Burns, and Adam Cross, and many great grandchildren. as well as a community of friends who will deeply miss her kind and gentle spirit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children of Wilma Cross to help cover the expenses for her funeral services.
